Specialist cardiology centre giving hope to thousands

“Through this initiative, many lives of cardiac patients are saved regularly. We are all very grateful to everyone who participated in establishing this medical centre.

“A bomb tore apart the bodies of my children and left them buried under the destruction and rubble.”

“I long for the old, beautiful days – when we lived in our peaceful town.” “I miss waking up in the morning to have breakfast with my kids and wife.

“I remember dropping them to school every day. It was a simple act that brought so much joy to my heart.”

As the crisis in Syria escalated, houses and towns were destroyed by falling bombs and explosive barrels. One day, a barrel bomb fell over Abd Al-Naser’s home.

He said: “When my wife and I lost our kids we lost our joy as well – falling into great sadness and depression.

“We decided to move to the northern part of Syria, in a town near the border, to escape warfare. We had no other choice or place to go to.

“Unfortunately, I realize now that the crisis is everywhere.”

After losing his children and leaving his home Abd Al-Naser developed stress-related heart disease and was brought to a medical centre where he was given life-saving surgery.

Kind donation made a big difference

The Cardiology Centre in Bab Al Hawa, was set up with $500,000 (Canadian dollars) to provide much-needed medical treatment for patients with cardiology diseases such heart failure, coronary artery diseases, and strokes.

Equipment and drugs were supplied and the centre treats around 1,800 patients per month (21,600 per year).

Abd Al-Naser’s wife gave birth to another child, giving the couple new hope.

Doctors are monitoring Abd Al-Naser’s heart consistently through advanced medical equipment that Islamic Relief Canada has provided – like ECG, arterial pressure machines and x-ray.

Abd Al-Naser said: “It’s hard to fathom how happy I am right now. The assistance given to me has made a big difference in my life.

“Through this initiative, many lives of cardiac patients are saved regularly. We are all very grateful to everyone who participated in establishing this medical centre.

“I’m looking forward to returning back home to hold my new child.”

Dr Obeida Amuri, centre manager, said: “This is the first and only centre in all northern Syria that provides specialist medical services for heart patients.

“Islamic Relief also established a cardiac intensive care unit with 12 beds.”
